Our MA in Screenwriting is designed to equip you with the knowledge and tools to become a working screenwriter in the film and television industries. Alongside acquiring the foundational craft skills that will enable you to produce a varied portfolio of work (from a calling-card short screenplay to an original feature screenplay or TV pilot), you will develop an unrivalled knowledge and understanding of the business of screenwriting from pitch presentations to commissioning. In accordance with the Raindance philosophy of learning through practice, you will have opportunities to collaborate with producers and directors both within and outside of the Raindance community to test and progress your writing at every stage of development. In addition to lectures and seminars dedicated to topics such as narratology, world-building, character development, and dialogue, you will receive instruction and mentorship from working screenwriting and filmmaking professionals to assist you with the development of your own film and TV projects. Through workshopping, pitching, storylining, story editing, and negotiating sessions, you will be exposed to the rigours and realities of the life of the professional screenwriter, empowering you with a greater understanding of the pathways available to you.
Getting in
As the university states it
Raindance considers multiple criteria to assess an applicant’s suitability for this programme. This criteria can include an academic, post- secondary degree, industry experience or transferrable professional skills. First and foremost, we will consider your readiness to engage with self-directed study, and the viability of your proposed learning pathway. Students over 21 can apply as mature students providing they can demonstrate the ability (and experience) to study at the appropriate level. Employment history will be advantageous and qualifications taken several years ago will also be taken into account. The following supporting evidence combine to determine an applicant’s suitability for this programme: • Diploma(s) or certificate(s) of your prior learning from an accredited UK university or international equivalent, higher education institution, college or training programme together with the transcript • Your up-to-date employment CV or student resume • A 500-word essay, either reflecting on a project you were involved in, or analysing a film that you find inspirational. • A written Learning Plan that briefly outlines your chosen focus of study, skills development, activities and resources to develop your knowledge. • A sample or artifact of creative work in which you undertook a key creative role (writer, director, producer, cinematographer, composer, editor etc.) Other supporting evidence may be required for some students, in addition to the above, and can be requested by the Registrar: • Proof of UK residence for the duration of your studies (for London-based students) • Additional course certificates or diplomas (if requested by the Administration Team) • Sample of academic writing (if requested by the Administration Team)
