Vehicles are no longer purely mechanical machines; they are complex electromechanical systems, driven by thousands of lines of software and designed using advanced tools and methodologies. From developing electric drivetrains that maximise energy efficiency, to designing active aerodynamic systems for high-end and hypercar applications, developing vehicles for clean-energy racing series, or creating advanced driver assistance systems for off-road applications, today’s automotive engineer must operate confidently across multiple engineering disciplines.. The Automotive Mechatronics course is designed to prepare engineers for this new reality. It provides a strong foundation in relevant mechanical engineering principles, electrical and electronic systems, control theory, vehicle communications, while introducing key technologies such as electric machines, power electronics, energy storage and high-voltage architectures. Who is it for? This course is designed for graduates who want to develop a strong, system-level understanding of modern, software-driven, intelligent vehicles and work across the mechanical–electrical–control engineering interface: - Engineering graduates (mechanical, electrical, electronic, aerospace and related disciplines) aiming to work at the intersection of mechanical, electrical and software-driven automotive systems that define modern vehicle architectures. - Graduates with a strong mathematical or scientific background seeking a modelling-, simulation- and control-focused pathway into the automotive sector. - Individuals interested in emerging vehicle technologies, including electrified powertrains, intelligent control systems, and advanced vehicle architectures, who want both theoretical depth and hands-on engineering experience. Why this course? Focused, future-ready curriculum — covering modelling, electronics, power electronics, estimation and control, embedded systems, rapid prototyping, and system integration for electrified and intelligent vehicles. Strong industry relevance — shaped through regular dialogue with automotive and technology employers and supported by Cranfield’s proximity to major UK engineering centres. Practical, project-centred learning — taught modules (~40%), a major group design project (~20%) and an individual research project (~40%) provide substantial hands-on experience, with many topics proposed by industry. Accredited by IMechE and IET — providing recognised further learning towards Chartered Engineer status. Accreditation The Automotive Mechatronics MSc is accredited by: - The Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) - Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) Informed by Industry The course is guided by an Industrial Advisory Panel featuring senior engineers and technical leaders from organisations such as Polestar Automotive UK, AVL, Jaguar Land Rover, Williams Advanced Engineering, Tata Motors and others. Students present their group project work to the panel each year, gaining direct feedback and valuable professional connections.

Getting in

As the university states it

A UK first or second class undergraduate degree with honours, as a minimum, or equivalent international qualification. Ideally applicants will have studied in engineering, mathematics or an applied science subject. If you are an international student you will need to provide evidence that you have achieved a satisfactory test result in an English qualification. The minimum standard expected from a number of accepted courses are as follows: IELTS - 6.5; TOEFL - 92; Pearson PTE Academic - 65; Cambridge English Scale - 180; Cambridge English: Advanced - C; Cambridge English: Proficiency - C.
