Scholarship Directory for International Students: Official Schemes and Scholarship Websites Compared

This directory compares the main places to look for scholarships: official government schemes, scholarship websites and databases. For each one you can see what it is best for, which countries and study levels it covers, and whether it is free to use.

Last checked: 6 October 2026. Each row shows when we last checked it.

Always confirm eligibility, funding and deadlines on the official scheme or university page before you apply. A search site is a place to find leads, not the final word. For the full advice, read our Scholarships for International Students guide.

How we choose what to list

  • It must be free for students to browse.
  • It must show real scholarship information, not just adverts.
  • It must link to, or clearly name, the official provider.
  • Nobody pays to be listed, and we do not sell rankings. If we ever have a commercial relationship with a listed organisation, we will say so on this page.
  • We note limitations as well as strengths.

Official government and programme schemes

These are the source of truth for deadlines and eligibility. Start here when you know the country you want.

Independent scholarship websites and databases

These sites bring many scholarships together. They are useful for discovery, but they vary in coverage and in how they source data.

How to use a scholarship website safely

  1. Treat every result as a lead. Open the official scheme or university page and read the rules there.
  2. Check dates. If a listing has no date or points to an expired round, assume it is out of date.
  3. Check who runs the site. Look for a named organisation, a real contact address and a clear explanation of how data is sourced.
  4. Never pay to apply. Genuine scholarships do not charge a fee to be considered.
  5. Be careful with personal data. Create an account only when needed, and avoid sharing ID documents or payment details with a search site.
  6. Cross check. If a scholarship only appears on one aggregator and not on the university or government site, treat it with caution.

Sources and methodology

We checked each provider's own website on 6 October 2026, covering what it is, coverage, cost and sign up requirements. Where a page did not state something, we say so rather than guess. Official scheme details come from each scheme's own pages. Deadlines, award values and eligibility can change, so verify current details with the provider before you apply.

Frequently asked questions

Which is the best scholarship website for international students?

There is no single best site. Official government and university pages are the most reliable, and independent websites are best for discovering options you did not know existed. Use the "Where should I start?" table above to pick one that fits your situation.

Where can I find legitimate scholarship websites?

Start with the official schemes listed above, then use the independent websites in this directory. Always confirm any scholarship you find on the provider's own official page.

Are scholarship websites free?

Most let you browse for free, but some ask you to register to see full details or apply. Check each site's terms.

Why is Chevening not in Scholarship Scanner?

Scholarship Scanner focuses on scholarships funded by UK universities themselves, so schemes such as Chevening and GREAT are excluded. Check those on their official pages.

Can a scholarship website guarantee I will get funding?

No. A search site can only help you find opportunities. Awards are decided by the scholarship provider.

How do I know a scholarship is real?

Confirm it on the provider's official website and watch for the scam warning signs in our guide.

I run a scholarship resource. Can I be listed?

Email us. We consider free, accurate resources for students, and nobody pays to be included.
