Why did Fadekemi switch from Medicine to Biochemistry?

I actually course transferred from medicine to biochemistry. I ended up transferring due to personal circumstances, but I chose biochemistry because I lovedddd STEM and wanted to study a course that was the embodiment of STEM.

Biochemistry gave me the opportunity to explore the areas of science that interested me while taking my studies in a different direction from medicine. For me, changing course wasn't the end of my university journey, it was a chance to find a subject that genuinely suited my interests.

Why did Fadekemi choose Biochemistry specifically?

One of the main attractions was the breadth of the subject. Although biology is a major part of the course, I've also been able to study areas including organic chemistry and computational chemistry.

That combination lets me explore science in greater depth, and it's one of the reasons Biochemistry appealed to me in the first place.

Why did Fadekemi choose the University of Lincoln?

I chose Lincoln because I wanted a bit of independence as an adult, but also because it has a smaller cohort, which makes learning and connecting with the professors so much easier.

What surprised Fadekemi about studying Biochemistry?

One of the biggest surprises has been discovering how many different areas are covered within the course. Some of the modules contained topics I hadn't expected to find particularly interesting before starting university.

That variety has helped make the course more engaging, and it's shown me that Biochemistry is broader than simply studying biology.

What does Fadekemi enjoy most about studying Biochemistry at Lincoln?

I've really enjoyed all my modules, especially my data analytics module, because it was very new and fresh content for me.

I've also found my lecturers really supportive when it comes to assessments and coursework, and I've made amazing friends, both on my course and outside of it.

What is a typical week like studying Biochemistry?

Monday to Friday is typically spent at university, between around 9am and 6pm, varying between the days. Outside of that, I spend the rest of my time playing volleyball or working.

What has been the hardest part of the course?

For me, one of the biggest challenges has been keeping on top of my coursework while also learning new tools and techniques. In particular, I've found working with applications like Excel and RStudio for my data analytics class challenging.

Learning data analysis alongside the scientific content of the degree requires a different set of skills, but it's become an important part of my university experience.

Has changing course affected Fadekemi's career plans?

Moving from medicine to Biochemistry has represented a significant change in career direction. I'm now aiming for the NHS Management Graduate Scheme specifically, rather than a clinical or research based route.

I do see myself building a long term career around that.

I'm a firm believer in doing things I'm good at, and managing, organising and planning have always been my strong points.

What does Fadekemi wish she had known before choosing a university course?

One of the biggest things I've learned is that you don't have to follow the most obvious or traditionally promoted university routes.

My advice is to remember there are plenty of options beyond the stereotypical courses students often hear about. My own journey is a good example of that, I started studying medicine, changed direction, and found myself enjoying a degree that combines several areas of STEM.

Would Fadekemi choose Biochemistry again?

Absolutely. If I could go back to the beginning of my university journey, I'd make the same choice.

Biochemistry offers an exciting combination of biology, organic chemistry and computational chemistry, giving me the opportunity to explore different areas of science in greater depth.

Don't feel pressured into choosing one of the stereotypical university courses simply because it's the route you're expected to take. If you enjoy STEM, it's worth looking beyond the most obvious choices and exploring courses that combine different areas of science.

My own move from medicine to Biochemistry shows that changing direction doesn't necessarily mean you've made a mistake. Sometimes it can lead you towards a subject that suits your interests better.
