Studying Computer Science & AI at the University of Melbourne: Faisal's Student Experience

Faisal Alruweili

BSc Computer Science, majoring in Artificial Intelligence, Undergraduate · University of Melbourne

2 September 2026 · 7 min read

Not every student's path through university runs in a straight line. For Faisal Alruweili, a long-standing interest in artificial intelligence took him from the UAE to Australia, and from Monash University to the University of Melbourne, without ever losing sight of the goal he started with.

We asked Faisal why he chose Computer Science and AI, what studying at Melbourne is really like, why he transferred universities partway through, and what advice he'd give students weighing up their own options.

Why did Faisal choose Computer Science & AI?

Faisal's course choice grew out of a genuine, long-running interest in artificial intelligence and where the technology is heading, rather than a decision made on the fly.

I was particularly drawn to that course because of my strong interest in artificial intelligence and its growing capabilities. This interest motivated me to pursue a degree that would allow me to develop my knowledge and skills in AI and build a career in this field.

Why did Faisal choose the University of Melbourne?

Faisal had already set his sights on studying in Australia, and Melbourne's standing as one of the country's leading universities made the decision straightforward.

I chose the University of Melbourne over other options because I had originally planned to study in Australia, and the University of Melbourne is widely regarded as one of the country's leading universities.

What surprised Faisal about university?

University turned out to be a bigger adjustment than expected, both in how differently classes were structured compared to school and in just how much there still was to learn about AI, despite having prior coursework and training behind him.

I quickly realised that my understanding of the field was still quite limited. AI is a broad and complex area that requires knowledge across many different topics, and at times I found myself overwhelmed by the amount of new information and concepts I needed to understand. However, this experience also motivated me to continue learning and develop a much deeper understanding of AI.

What is a typical week like studying CS & AI at Melbourne?

Faisal's week is a steady mix of classes, independent study, and time spent staying active outside of university.

He attends university Monday to Friday, keeping up with coursework and classes, then uses evenings and weekends to prepare for the week ahead, revise earlier material, and work through assignments and projects. Alongside his studies, he trains twice a week at the gym and practises martial arts, keeping a consistent routine that balances academic demands with personal interests.

How has Faisal's career direction developed since starting university?

Faisal's career goals haven't shifted since day one, he's stayed focused on computer science and AI throughout. What did change was where he chose to pursue them: partway through his degree, he transferred from Monash University to the University of Melbourne.

No career changes, I've been on my plan since I've started. Nothing changed.

My career direction has remained the same since I started university, as I am still focused on pursuing a career in computer science and artificial intelligence. However, I transferred from Monash University to the University of Melbourne because I felt that it offered greater opportunities for my academic and professional development. The University of Melbourne provides a strong academic reputation, a flexible course structure, access to a wide range of computing and technology subjects, and opportunities to develop both theoretical knowledge and practical skills.

Would Faisal choose the same course and university again?

Yes, without hesitation, and he has clear advice for students working out their own shortlist.

I would definitely make the same choice again. My advice to prospective students would be to carefully research their options and choose a university that best suits their individual circumstances and goals. It is important to consider factors such as financial affordability, convenience, future career opportunities, whether you would like to work and live in that country after graduating, and the overall safety and environment of the location. Most importantly, I believe students should choose a course that they are genuinely interested in and passionate about, rather than simply following what others believe is best for them.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between a general Computer Science degree and one with an AI major?

A general Computer Science degree covers core programming, systems and theory across the whole discipline, while an AI major layers on specialised subjects like machine learning, natural language processing and data-driven modelling. Most universities, including Melbourne, let students choose or add a major partway through a broader CS degree rather than committing to AI specifically from day one.

Do you need prior AI or programming experience to start a Computer Science degree?

Not usually. Most undergraduate Computer Science courses are designed to teach programming and computing fundamentals from the ground up, though some prior exposure, like Faisal's earlier AI courses, can help with confidence even if it doesn't remove the learning curve entirely. Specific prerequisite subjects (often Maths) vary by university, so it's worth checking individual course requirements.

Is it common for international students to transfer between Australian universities?

Yes, transferring between Australian universities partway through a degree is a recognised and fairly common pathway, often used by students looking for a different course structure, stronger subject offerings, or better alignment with their long-term goals. Credit transfer arrangements vary by university and course, so it's worth checking how much of a completed degree would carry across before applying. Our guide to studying in Australia covers how the application and visa process works for international students more broadly.

What makes the University of Melbourne well regarded for Computer Science?

The University of Melbourne is consistently ranked among Australia's leading universities for computing and technology, with a broad range of subjects spanning theoretical computer science through to applied areas like AI and data science, alongside a flexible course structure that allows students to shape their specialisation as they progress.

What career paths can a Computer Science degree with an AI major lead to?

Graduates with a Computer Science degree and an AI specialisation commonly move into roles such as machine learning engineer, data scientist, software engineer, or AI research roles, often starting with internships or graduate programmes before specialising further. The breadth of the underlying CS degree also keeps more general software engineering roles open alongside AI-specific paths.
