Students will have acquired an advanced understanding of the theories of the causes of crime, including psychological, sociological, cultural and environmental theories and the empirical research that underpins those theories. They will also have an understanding of the statute and case law governing the criminal justice process, particularly aspects of the criminal law, criminal procedure and sentencing. They will have a good knowledge of the systems and institutions involved in the criminal justice process including prisons and providers of community service penalties, the police, the courts, restorative justice and health providers whose activities are linked to the criminal justice process. Graduates will be able to interpret relevant legislation, analyse and critique existing policies in criminal justice fields and identify or appraise suggestions for reform.
