Graduates from the Bachelor of Environmental Management and Planning will have attained basic competence in multiple disciplines of strategic significance to environmental management and planning. They will have developed an understanding of the limitations of single and multi-disciplinary approaches to resolution of environmental problems, and will have been exposed to interdisciplinary environmental and planning theory, methods and practices. High performing BEMP graduates will be able to commence postgraduate study for an honours, masters or PhD degree. BEMP graduates will have the following attributes: An ability to locate, evaluate and use information from a range of sources. An ability to synthesise a wide range of knowledge and to think critically for problem solving. Familiarity with gender, cultural, ethnicity and equity issues and perspectives. In particular, graduates will have an understanding of Maori and Pakeha perspectives and their implications for environmental management and planning. A commitment to professional standards of behaviour, based on knowledge and application of professional ethics and codes of conduct. An ability to communicate effectively to specific audiences using appropriate media. Strong interpersonal skills, including an ability to relate to people from a wide range of backgrounds and communities. An understanding of environmental issues at scales ranging from local to global. An awareness of responsibilities of environmental management and planning at scales ranging from local to global. An understanding of statutory and institutional processes for managing the environment at a range of scales. Knowledge of the key theoretical principles underlying the practice of environmental management and planning. Knowledge of the key principles and practices underpinning sustainable development.
